AEI505.41 TO 42 1
Objective

On completion of this topic, you would be able to know

about

• Band pass filters

• Type of Band pass filters

AEI505.41 TO 42 2
Recap

In the previous class we have studied about

• Second order high pass filter

• Design of second order HPF

AEI505.41 TO 42 3
Band Pass Filter

• A Band Pass Filter has a pass-band between two cut

off frequencies fH and fL (fH>fL).

• The Input frequency outside pass band is attenuated.

AEI505.41 TO 42 4
Types of filters

1. Wide band pass filter

3. Narrow band pass filter

AEI505.41 TO 42 5
Wide band pass filter
Has figure of merit (or) quality factor Q<10.

Narrow band pass filter

Has figure of merit (or) quality factor Q>10.

AEI505.41 TO 42 6
Quality factor

• Q is measure of selectivity

• Higher the value of Q, more selective or narrower is its

bandwidth.

AEI505.41 TO 42 7
fC fC
Q= =
B.W fH-fL

Where,
fC = center frequency.
B.W = band width.
fH = high cut off frequency.
fL = low cut off frequency.

AEI505.41 TO 42 8
• For wide band pass,

fc = √fH fL

AEI505.41 TO 42 9
Wide Band Pass Filter

• Wide band pass filter can be formed by cascading high

pass and low pass sections.

• To obtain a ±20db/decade band pass, first order high pass

& first order low pass sections are cascaded.

AEI505.41 TO 42 10
AEI505.41 TO 42 11
• To obtain a ±40dB/decade band pass, second order high
pass & second order low pass are connected in series.

• Voltage gain magnitude is equal to The product of the

voltage gain magnitude of high pass & Low pass filters.

AEI505.41 TO 42 12
AEI505.41 TO 42 13
Vo AFT (f/fL)
=
Vin √[1+(f/fL)2][1+(f/fH)2]

Where,
AFT=total pass band gain
f =frequency of input
fL =low cut off frequency
fH =high cut off frequency

AEI505.41 TO 42 14
Narrow Band-pass Filter

• Two feedback paths, hence name multiple feedback filter.

• OP-amp is used in inverting mode.

• Designed for specific values of fC & Q

Design

choose C1=C2=C

Q
R1 = 2πf C A
C F

Q
R2 =
2πfC C [ 2Q2-AF ]

AEI505.41 TO 42 18
Q
R3 =
πfC C

AF= gain at fC = R3/2R1

AF<2Q2

AEI505.41 TO 42 19
Advantages
• Center frequency fC can be changed to a new frequency
without changing the gain or band width.

• Change of frequency can be accomplished by changing R2

to R2l

fC 2
R2l = R2
f Cl
