AEI505.52 TO 53 1
Recap

In the last class we have learnt about

• Introduction of the triangular wave generator

• Circuit diagram and its operations

AEI505.52 TO 53 2
Objectives

Upon the completion of this topic you will be able

to know about saw – tooth wave generator

• Introduction
• circuit diagram
• operation

AEI505.52 TO 53 3
Interaction/discussion

• What is a triangular wave generator

AEI505.52 TO 53 4
SAW TOOTH WAVE GENERATOR
AEI505.52 TO 53 5
Introduction to saw-tooth wave generator

• The difference between the triangular wave and saw-

tooth wave forms is that the rise time of the triangular
wave is always equal to the fall time.

• Same amount of the time is required for the triangular

wave to swing from –Vramp to +Vramp as from +Vramp to
-Vramp

AEI505.52 TO 53 6
Introduction to saw-tooth wave generator

• The saw tooth wave form has unequal rise time and fall
time

• It may rise positively many times faster than it falls

negatively or vice versa.

AEI505.52 TO 53 7
Construction
• The triangular wave generator can be converted into a
saw tooth generator by injecting a variable dc voltage
into the non inverting terminal of the integrator A2

• By using the potentiometers and connecting it to the

+Vcc and –VEE that can be done.

• Depending on the R4 setting a certain dc level is inserted

in the output of the A2
AEI505.52 TO 53 8
Operation

• Suppose that the output of A1 is a square wave and the

potentiometer R4 is adjusted for a certain dc level.

• This means that the output of A2 will be triangular wave,

riding on same dc level that is a function of this settings.

• The duty cycle of the square wave will be determined by

the polarity and amplitude of this dc level.

AEI505.52 TO 53 9
Operation Contd…

• A duty cycle less then 50% will then cause the

output of A2 to be a saw tooth.

• When the wiper is at the centre of R4, the output

of A2 is a triangular wave.

• For any other position of the R4 wiper the output

is a saw tooth wave form.

AEI505.52 TO 53 10
Operation Contd…

• As the R4 wiper is moved toward -VEE the rise time of the

saw tooth wave becomes longer than the fall time.

• On the other hand as the wiper is moved towards +Vcc,

the fall time becomes longer than the rise time

• The frequency of the saw tooth wave decreases as R4 is

adjusted toward +Vcc or –VEE.

• However, the amplitude of the saw tooth wave is

independent of the R4 setting.
