AEI505.54 TO 55. 6
Introduction to 555 timer

• Signetics corporation first introduced this device as the

SE/NE 555 in early 1970.

• Since its debut, the device has been used in a number of

normal and useful applications.

AEI505.54 TO 55. 7
Applications

A sample of these applications includes

• Monostable and astable multivibrators

• Dc to dc converts

• Digital logic probes,

• Wave form generators

• Analog frequency meters

AEI505.54 TO 55. 8
Applications Contd…

• Tachometers

• Temperatures measurement and control devices

• Infra red transmitters

• Burglar and toxic gas alarms

• Voltage regulators

• Electric eyes and many others

AEI505.54 TO 55. 9
Introduction to 555 timer

• The 555 is a monolithic timing circuit that can produce

• It can produce accurate and highly stable time delays or

oscillations

• The timer basically operates in one of the two modes

• A mono stable multi vibrator

• As an astable multi vibrator

AEI505.54 TO 55. 10
Introduction to 555 timer Contd…

• The device is available as an 8-pin metal can

• An 8-pin mini DIP type

• A 14 pin DIP type

AEI505.54 TO 55. 11
Range

• The SE 555 is designed for the operating temperature

range from -55OC to +125OC

• NE 555 operates over a temperature range of 00C to

70OC.

AEI505.54 TO 55. 12
Introduction to 555 timer Contd…

The important features of the 555 timer are,

• It operates on +5 volts to +18 volts supply voltage in both
free-running (astable) and one shot (mono stable )
modes
• It has an adjustable duty cycle

• Timing is from micro seconds through hours

AEI505.54 TO 55. 13
Introduction to 555 timer Contd…

• It has high current output

• It can source or sink 200 mA

• The out put can drive TTL

• It has a temperature stability of 0.005% /OC

AEI505.54 TO 55. 14
Introduction to 555 timer Contd…

• Like general purpose op-amps, the 555 timer is

• Reliable

• Easy to use

• Low cost

AEI505.54 TO 55. 15
PIN 1: ground-

All voltages are measured with respect to this terminal.

PIN2: trigger-

The out put of the timer depends on the amplitude of the

external trigger pulse applied to this pin .

AEI505.54 TO 55. 16
PIN3: output-

There are two ways the load can be Connected to o/p

terminal , either between Pin 3 and pin 1(ground ) or
between pin3 and pin 8(+Vcc).

PIN4:Reset-

The 555 timer can be reset (disabled) by applying a

negative pulse to this pin.

AEI505.54 TO 55. 17
PIN5:control voltage-

An external voltage applied to this terminal changes the

threshold as well as trigger voltage.

PIN6:Threshold-

This is the non-inverting input terminal of comparator , when the

voltage at this pin>=2/3Vcc,the output of the comparator goes
high.

AEI505.54 TO 55. 18
PIN7:Discharge-

This pin is connected internally to the collector of Q1.when

the output is high,Q1 is off and acts as an open circuit to
external capacitor C connected across it. when the output
is low ,Q is saturated and acts as short circuit.

PIN8:+Vcc-

The supply voltage of +5v to +18V is applied to this pin with

respect to ground.
