Recap

In last class we have learnt :

• Astable multivibrator using 555 timer IC

AEI505.62 to 63 2
Objectives:

Upon the completion of this topic the student

will be able to learn about

• Monostable multivibrator using 555 timer IC .

AEI505.62 to 63 3
The output of the circuit is approximately zero

When an external trigger is applied the output to go high

(+ Vcc) the time direction of it is determined by the
external RC network

At the end of the internal the output automatically

reverts back to logic stable state

It will be in that state until a trigger pulse is again

applied the cycle repeats
AEI505.62 to 63 4
Monostable multivibrator is also called as “one-shot
multivibrator”

It is a pulse generator circuit in which duration of pulses in

determined by ‘RC’ network

‘RC’ network is connected internally to the 555 timer

It has only one stable state ,i.e., it is why it is called as

mono stable multivibrator
Initially the o/p of the monostable is in low

Input and output waveforms

AEI505.62 to 63 8
Operation of 555 timer

• It depends on its internal function

• The three resistors R1,R2 and R3 serve as

voltage divider for the source voltage

• Thus 1/3rd of source voltage Vcc appears across

each resistor

• The voltage at V1 and V2 serve as reference

voltages for the two comparators

• Comparators is basically an op-amp which

changes states when one of its input exceeds
the reference voltage
AEI505.62 to 63 9
Operation of 555 timer contd
• The flip-flop changes states according to the
voltage value of its input
• Thus if the voltage at threshold terminal rises
above +2/3 Vcc . It causes comparator 1 to cause
flip-flop to change its state. If the trigger voltage
falls below +1/3 Vcc it causes the comparator2 to
change its state
• Thus the o/p of flip-flop is controlled by voltages
of two comparators
• The o/p of flip-flop is used to drive the discharge
transistor and o/p stage
AEI505.62 to 63 10
Operation of 555 timer contd

• A high or +ve flip-flop output turns on both the discharge

transistor and output stage

• The discharge transistor becomes conductive and

behaves as a low resistance short circuit to ground the
output stage behaves similarly

• When the flip-flop output assumes the low or Zero state

reverse action takes place that is the discharge transistor
behaves as an open circuit or infinite impedance

• The output stage assume high or infinite impedance

AEI505.62 to 63 11
Operation of 555 timer contd

• Thus the operational state of discharge transistor

and output stage depends on

• Voltage applied to the threshold and trigger input

terminals

• Monostable multivibrator using 555 timer ic

• A monostable multivibrator is also called as a one-

shot multivibrator

Circuit operation

• It is a pulse generating circuit the duration of the pulse is

determined by the RC network externally to the 555 timer

• Initially the output is low the circuit in a stable state the

transistor is on and the capacitor ‘C’ is shorted out to ground

• When –ve trigger pulse is applied to the pin 2, the transistor

is turned off releases the short circuit across the external

capacitor C and drives the output high

AEI505.62 to 63 14
14
• The capacitor ‘C’ now starts charges up towards Vcc
through RA

• When the voltage across the capacitor equals 2/3Vcc

comparator ‘1’ s o/p switches from low to high It drives the
output to its low state via the o/p flip-flop

• The output of the flip-flop turns the transistor Q1 on

AEI505.62 to 63 15
• Then the capacitor C rapidly discharges through the
transistor

• The output of the monostable remains low until a trigger

pulse is again applied

• Then the cycle repeats

• The time during which the output remains high is given

by
tp = 1.1 RA C

AEI505.62 to 63 16
Conditions

• The pulse width of the trigger input must be

smaller then the expected pulse width of the
output waveform

• The trigger pulse must be negative going input

signal with an amplitude larger than 1/3 Vcc
