AEI504.40 to 41 1
Objectives

On the Completion of this topic, you would be

able to know…

• Data Acquisition Systems (DAS)

• Basic parts of (DAS)

AEI504.40 to 41 2
Definition of Data Acquisition Systems

• DATA is the information that has been prepared ,in

particular format, for specific purpose .

• This word has 3 particular means

• Data as distinct from program instructions.

• Data is refer to all operands of Program as constant ,

variable etc….

AEI504.40 to 41 3
Introduction to Data Acquisition Systems
(DAS)

• Source language instructions serve as data for

compiler and resulting object code is data for link
loader but when execution begins same object code is
now the program.

• In context of individual program or sure of program to

the data may be used in more restricted sense.

AEI504.40 to 41 4
Data Acquisition Systems

• In modern data is distinct from text , voice and image .

like wise data process is distinct from word processing ,
voice processing , image processing

• i.e., focus on highly formatted nature. As opposed to free

structure of natural language text.

AEI504.40 to 41 5
Data Acquisition Systems

• Data acquisition is another name for data capture and /

or data collection.
• Data acquisition systems via analog signals are used in
• Communication
• Electronic
• Medical applications

• Conversion to digitized systems is widely used today

because complex circuits

AEI504.40 to 41 6
Advantages of Data Acquisition Systems

• Low cost
• Accurate
• Simple to implement by using microprocessor
and microcomputer
• They perform difficult measurements and control
functions

AEI504.40 to 41 7
Objectives of DAS:

• DAS must acquire the necessary data, at correct

speed and at the correct time.

• Use of all data effectively to uniform the operator about

the state of the plant.

• It must monitor the complete plant operation to

maintain on line optimum and safe operations.

AEI504.40 to 41 8
Objectives of DAS:

• It must provide effective human communication system

and be able to identify problem areas, thereby
minimizing unit availability and maximizing unit through
point at minimum constant.

• It must be able to collect, summarize and store data for

diagnosis of operation and record purpose.

AEI504.40 to 41 9
Objectives of DAS Contd…

• It must be able to compute unit performance indicate using

on-line, real time data.

• It must be flexible and capable of being expanded for

future requirements.

• It must be reliable, and not have a down time great than

0.1%

AEI504.40 to 41 10
Basic Data Acquisition System

AEI504.40 to 41 11
Description of Basic Data Acquisition
System
1. Analog Multipluxer :
• Permits number of signal sources to be automatically
measured .
• It consists of series switches
• whose inputs are tied to various analog
signals and
• whose output are tied to common measuring
point.
• Each input’s individually connected to measuring point
in pre-determined sequence.

Description of Basic Data Acquisition
System

2. Signal Conditioning Consists of :

• Linear amplification,
• Logarithmic amplification,
• Filtering,
• Peak deflection,
• Or sample and hold.
– Often more than one of these functions is required.

Description of Basic DAS Contd…

3. A/D Converter:
• Translates the analog signal into an encoded digital
format

AEI504.40 to 41 14
Basic Data Acquisition System

4. Digital Clock: Provides the master timing for DAS. It

may be simple as multi phased crystal controlled
oscillator;
• It may provide the used with wide selection of
multiplexer rates and modes of operation.

AEI504.40 to 41 15
Basic Data Acquisition System

1. Manual Data Entry: DAS provide users with a way to

tag the data they are accumulating, through some sort
of manual data entry.
2. Digital Buffer : Used to record discrete events
3. it is a requirement of DAS.
4. these events are usually accompanied by opening or
closing of switch , they represent a digital input.

AEI504.40 to 41 16
Basic Data Acquisition System

10. Output Buffer: Acts as the data collector for DAS.

• It gathers ordered sequence data as multiplexer channel
number,
• signal conditioner gain
• A/D converter data
• manual data
• clock information
• discrete events.
• This buffer combines the data with proper format for
entry into the recording or processing system.

AEI504.40 to 41 17
Basic Data Acquisition System

• It also provides proper buffering and control to interface

with the recording or processing device.

• If processing device were mini computer output buffer

might called processing peripheral controller.

Basic Data Acquisition System

11. Recording / processing device:

• Paper tape punches

• Tele printer (TTY)
• Magnetic tape units
• Line printer
• CRT’S floppy disks
• General purpose digital computer.
• Special purpose digital processors.
