AEI504.43 1
Objectives

On Completion of this topic you would be able

to know about

• Data logger systems

AEI504.43 2
Data Logger

• They are developed recently and accepted universally

in medium to big plants
• It has a microprocessor or computer based control
system
• The analog or digital inputs are received serially after
scanning
• Then processed and sent to storage units

AEI504.43 4
Data Logger Systems

• It is a data acquisition system

• That measures the analog inputs , translates the

results into digital domain , and stores the data for

future processing for analysis.

• Data logger provides an automated method of making

the measurements and recording the data effectively&

accurately by eliminating measurement errors

AEI504.43 5
Data Logger Systems

• It can perform the above functions at precise intervals

and with degree of accuracy beyond any persons

physical capability.

• Because data is stored in digital format , the data

analysis is easily performed by off- line computer .

AEI504.43 6
• Block 1 represents analog inputs of various process
variables like flow, pressure, temperature, strain, rpm,
level, frequency etc.,

• Block ‘3’ multiplexes or scans the inputs

• Block ‘4’ converts analog signal into digital output

AEI504.43 7
• Block ‘2’ represents digital inputs

• Digital inputs are scanned / multiplexed by block ‘5’

• They are all enter into block ‘6’ the microprocessor control

system

• They are controlled from the instructions given from front

panel

AEI504.43 8
The functions performed by block 8 are

• Scanning
• Linearization
• Temperature compensation
• Setting alarm units & limits
• Averaging data
• Providing engineering units
AEI504.43 9
• Block 8 shows the alarm annunciators unit

• Block 9 shows the display unit

• Block 10 shows the interfacing of the recorders, printers,

teletype writers or the computer terminals
• Block 11 used for connection of remote control
computer

AEI504.43 10
Advantages of Data Logger Systems

• Since many data loggers are highly portable , data

taken can be automated even in very remote
locations

AEI504.43 11
Characteristics

1. Modularity : The system can be expanded whenever

required ,simple and efficiently.

2. Reliability and ruggedness: Designed to operate

continuously without interrupts even in the worst

industrial environments .For this purpose whole

system is made quite rugged.

AEI504.43 12
Characteristics

1. Accuracy: data loggers are accurate

2. Management Tool: Because it performs many other

functions product result in handy form.

3. Ease in use: It communicate with operators in a normal

human logical manner.

AEI504.43 13
Summary

We have discussed about

• Genaralised data acquisition systems

AEI504.43 14
