Recap

In the previous class we have learnt about :

 Audio sensor (or) detector.

 Types of audio sensor.

AEI405.90 2
Objectives

Upon completion of this topic you will be able to

know about

 Torque transducer

 Types of torque transducers

AEI405.90 3
Definition

 Torque is defined as that force which tends to produce

rotation.

 It is the moment due to tangential force

T=LW
 Where,
T=torque
L=length of the force arm
W=force
AEI405.90 4
Definition…

 Transducer is a device which converts a non-electrical

quantity into electrical.

 Torque is a rotational force.

 Torque transducers measure the torsional force applied

between the two sides of a moving body.

AEI405.90 5
It is characterized by

 A high torsional stiffness

 Large capacity

 High resistance to bending moments

 Minimal friction error and low error sensitivity due to the

absence of moving parts.

AEI405.90 6
Types of torque transducers

 Rotating torque sensors

 Stationary sensors

AEI405.90 7
Rotating torque transducers
 Measurement is bidirectional

 It consists of metal shaft with bounded strain gauge

 It is connected in the Wheatstone bridge as shown in Fig.1.

 Stress acting on rotating shaft is subjected to torsion.

AEI405.90 8
Diagram of Strain gauge type torque transducer

Fig.1

AEI405.90 9
Torque meters

 During torsion of a cylinder, strain (tensile or

compressive) exists at 450 C to the axis

 This can be measured by bonded strain gauges

 The output can be increased by using 4 gauges, so that,

adjacent arms have strains of opposite nature

AEI405.90 10
Torque meters

 The device is useful for both static and dynamic torque

measurements

 Torques over a range of 100 to 100,000 N-cm can be

measured with this device

AEI405.90 11
Stationary torque transducer
 There is change in permeability of the material subjected

to tensile or compressive stress.

 Permeability increases under tensile and decreases

under compressive stress.

 The sensor consists of two primary and two secondary

windings mounted near the rotating shaft

AEI405.90 12
Torque transducer 1

AEI405.90 13
Torque transducer 2 (rotating torque sensor)

AEI405.90 14
Uses of transducer
 It ensures efficiency

 Safety for measurements in motor and transmission test

benches and for monitoring of pumps.

AEI405.90 15
Summary
