OBJECTIVES

On completion of this period you would be able to know

• High Frequency Power Source for Induction Heating

• Applications of Induction Heating

High Frequency Power Source for Induction Heating

AEI602.22 3
Operation of the Circuit

• The A.C supply voltage is stepped up by the

transformer and then rectified by the bridge
rectifier.

• Ripple components are minimized by the use of

LC filter.

• Now this high D.C voltage is applied to Colpitt’s

Oscillator.
AEI602.22 4
Operation of the Circuit…

• The oscillator circuit produces high frequency

power and feeds it to the input of an inductive
coil.

• The inductive coil is the primary of the work coil.

• The work piece acts like a short circuited

secondary.

AEI602.22 5
Operation of the Circuit…

• To minimize the heat loss in the oscillatory

circuit, the induction coils are made in the form
of hallow tubes.

• Cold water is circulated through the hallow

induction coil to absorb the power loss in the
oscillator.

Advantages of Induction Heating

• Less wastage of heat

• Induction heating can be done in any kind of

gaseous environment.

• Temperature can be accurately controlled by

automatic means.

AEI602.22 9
Disadvantages

• Efficiency is quite low.

• Needs a frequency converter makes the

process costly and complex.

AEI602.22 10
Applications of Induction Heating

• Annealing of Brass and Bronze items.

• Surface hardening of Steel.

• Soldering or brazing of Copper.

• Melting of Metals.
