AEI602.25 to 26 1
OBJECTIVES

After completion of this lesson the student will be

able to know

• Electrodes used in Di-Electric Heating

• Method of Electrodes Coupling to RF Generator

• High Frequency Power Source for Di-Electric heating

• Applications of Di-Electric Heating

AEI602.25 to 26 2
Electrodes used in Di-electric Heating

• The Di-electric to be heated shall be placed

between the electrodes.

• Using properly designed electrodes, uniform

potential gradient in the di-electric material can be
set or different parts of the material can be given
different potential gradients.

AEI602.25 to 26 3
If different parts of Di-electric material are to be
heated, then air clearance is permitted between
the material and one or both the plates as shown
below so that to maintain different electric field
intensities.

AEI602.25 to 26 4
The potential gradient in air is given by

Method of Coupling of electrodes to R.F.
Generator

1. Electrode Directly across the Tank coil

AEI602.25 to 26 6
2. Load Across a Part of the Tank Coli

AEI602.25 to 26 7
3. Auxiliary Inductor in Series with the Load

The load it self treated as a capacitor and

along with the series Inductor it gives series
resonance effect.

AEI602.25 to 26 8
High Frequency power supply for Di-electric
Heating

The circuit diagram of high frequency power source is

shown in the figure below.

Fig 5 AEI602.25 to 26 9
Operation of the Circuit

• The A.C supply voltage is stepped up by the

transformer and then rectified by the bridge
rectifier.

• Ripple components are minimized by the use of

LC filter.

• Now this high D.C voltage is applied to Radio

Frequency Oscillator.
AEI602.25 to 26 10
Operation of the Circuit…
• The R.F oscillator circuit produces very high
frequencies at about 1 MHz or above.

• The high R.F oscillations are applied to the two

electrodes between which the work piece is kept
as Di-electric medium.

• Since the energy conversion takes place

throughout the mass of the work piece, heating
effect is uniform.

AEI602.25 to 26 11
Applications of Di-electric Heating

• Gluing of wood

• Preheating of plastic preform

• Sewing of plastic films

• Diathermy

AEI602.25 to 26 12
Applications…

• Gluing of wood
Wooden panels are made by gluing boards
together edgewise. Sometimes veneers are laid
over glued panels.
Dielectric heating in the region of the glue
between adjacent wood parts permits a strong
bond.

AEI602.25 to 26 13
Applications…

• Preheating of Plastic preform

Thermosetting plastics are required to be heated

to a particular temperature for hardening or setting

The raw material for the thermosetting plastics is

called plastic preform.

AEI602.25 to 26 14
Applications…

• Sewing of plastic films

An electronic sewing machine uses di-electric

heating to sew plastic film material in to different
moulds and shapes.

AEI602.25 to 26 15
Applications…

• Diathermy

For the treatment of certain types of pains and

diseases, some tissues and bones of the body
with the help of di-electric heating.
