Branch : AEIE
Institute : Govt. Polytechnic for women, Srikakulam
Semester : VI
Subject : Industrial Electronics, PLC and SCADA
Subject code : AEI-602
Topic : Ultrasonics
Duration : 50 Minutes
Sub topic : Piezo-electric effect
Teaching aids : ppt, Animation, Photographs, Diagrams.
AEI602.37 1
Objectives

On the completion of the period you would be able

to understand

• Piezo- electric effect.

AEI602.37 2
Piezo-electric effect
• Piezo-electric effect occurs only in non-conductive
materials.

• Piezo-electric materials can be divided into two groups

crystals and cermaics

AEI602.37 3
Piezo-electric effect…

• The examples of piezo-electric materials are Quartz,

Barium titanate,lead niobate,lead zirconate titanate

• The piezoelectric material has the ability to produce the

voltage output in response to a applied stress.

AEI602.37 4
Piezo-electric effect…

• The piezo-electric material has the ability to produce a

strain output in response to an applied voltage.

AEI602.37 5
Piezo-electric effect…

• Piezo-electric effect means production of a potential

difference across the opposite faces of a substance, due
to contraction or expansion between the opposite faces.

• This voltage appears due to the crystal lattice

deformation.

AEI602.37 6
Piezo-electric effect…

• The application of force to a crystal of quartz or rochelle

salt produces a voltage across the crystal.

• The application of an electric field may cause the crystal

to expand or contract in certain directions.

AEI602.37 7
Piezo-electric effect…

• The piezo-electric deformations are directly proportional

to the electric field and changes sign when the field is
reversed.

• Piezo-electric effect is possible only in crystals that do

not possess a centre of symmetry.

AEI602.37 8
Piezo-electric effect…
Equivalent circuit of a quartz crystal.

Fig 1.1
AEI602.37 9
Piezo-electric effect…

• The values R, L,C in the figure 1.1 represent the series

resonant circuit of a quartz crystal.

• The component C’ represent the electrodes and holder

assembly capacitance.

AEI602.37 10
Piezo-electric effect…

• The electrode capacitance C’ show parallel resonance.

• In quartz crystal the parallel resonant frequency is a bit

higher than the series resonance frequency.

AEI602.37 11
Summary

We have discussed
