AEI602.66 1
Objectives

On the completion of this topic, you would be

able to know

• What does SCADA mean

• Features of SCADA

• Architecture of SCADA

AEI602.66 2
What does SCADA mean

• SCADA stands for Supervisory Control And Data

acquisition.

• As the name indicates, it is not a full control, system

but rather focuses on the supervisory level.

AEI602.66 3
What does SCADA mean…

• It is a purely software package that is placed on

top of hardware used to

– Acquire data from process to which it is interfaced, in

general via Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), or
other commercial hardware modules
– Graphical display the current and past states of process
variables through computer screens & printed reports to
control the process.
AEI602.66 4
Features of SCADA…

• Data acquisition and display

Store binary & analog data into process data

base

• Alarm & Events

record important changes and operator

actions

AEI602.66 5
Features of SCADA…

• History data base

keep a record of the process values

• Measurand processing

calculate derived values (limit supervision, trending)

• Logging & reporting

AEI602.66 6
Features of SCADA…

•Human Machine Interface (HMI):

graphical object state presentation, lists, reports

• Operator Command handling

binary commands, set points
recipes, batches, scripts (command procedures)

• Interfacing to planning & analysis functions: CMMS, …

Hardware architecture

Fig.2
AEI602.66 9
Architecture of SCADA…

• Two basic layers in a SCADA system:

• The "client layer" which caters for the man machine

interaction

• The "data server layer" which handles most of the

process data control activities.

AEI602.66 10
Architecture of SCADA…

• The data servers communicate with devices in the

field through process controllers, e.g. PLCs, are
connected to the data servers either directly or via
networks or field buses.

• Data servers are connected to each other and to client

stations via an Ethernet LAN.

AEI602.66 11
Software architecture of SCADA

Fig.3 AEI602.66 12
Software architecture of SCADA…

• SCADA client
SCADA server
SCADA development environment

• Communication is carried on a publish-subscribe and

event driven bases with the use of TCP/IP protocol.

• These multi tasking are carried out based on RTDB in

servers.

AEI602.66 13
Software architecture of SCADA…

• Servers are responsible for data acquisition & data

handling

• ODBC interface to the data in the archive/logs

• A library of APIs supporting C, C++, and VB to access

data in RTDB, logs and archives.

AEI602.66 14
Software architecture of SCADA…

• Alarm handling is based on limit, status checking

performed in the servers.

• Logging is a medium term storage of data on disk.

• Archiving is long term storage of data either on disk or

permanent storage medium.

AEI602.66 15
Software architecture of SCADA…

• Logging of data is only initiated if the value changes.

• Logged data can be transferred to an archive

once the log is filled.

AEI602.66 16
Software architecture of SCADA…

• The concept of recipe is that a particular system

configuration can be saved to a file and reloaded later.

• A graphics editor has facilities of developing symbols

and can import predefined symbol from library.
