Name of the staff :Sri N.KHAJA MEERAN
Designation :Lecturer
Branch :AEIE
Institute :S.G.P.R Govt polytechnic,Kurnool
Year/Semester :III Semester
Subject :Process Instrumentation-I
Subject code :AEI-305
Topic :Displacement and position measurement
Sub-Topic :Principle of operation of Hall probe
Duration :50 min
Teaching Aids :PPT, Animations, Photographs.
AEI 305.34 1
Objective:

Upon the completion of this topic you will be able

to know about

• Principle and operation of Hall probe.

• Its advantages.
• Applications

AEI 305.34 2
Principle

• It converts speed of rotation into an electrical signal.

• This is used to determine angular speed of a rotating

device.

AEI 305.34 3
Hall Probe

VH Hall
Voltage

AEI 305.34 4
Operation

• The hall probe is rigidly suspended between the poles

of permanent magnet.

• The magnet is connected to the shaft whose angular

velocity is to be measured.

As the shaft rotates the hall probe remains stationary.

AEI 305.34 5
• A constant current is applied to the electrical contacts at
the end of the probe

• It is done by means of a constant current source

• A voltage (Hall voltage ) is generated across the probe

• The voltage generated across the probe is directly

proportional to the sine of the angular displacement of
the shaft.

AEI 305.34 6
KH I B
The hall voltage is given by VH 
t
Where
KH =Hall coefficient
I = electric current
B= flux density
t= thickness of strip

• A linear relationship exists between the rotation and

the output voltage can be obtained up to ± 60 of the
rotation.
AEI 305.34 7
Advantages

3. Small size.
4. High resolution.
5. It is a non contact type device

AEI 305.34 8
Applications

• Used for measurement of

• Velocity
• rpm

• Non contact current

• Magnetic field
