Subject : Process Instrumentation – I
Subject code : AEI-305
Topic : PH Measurement
Duration : 50 Mts
Sub Topic : Importance of Measurement of PH
Teaching Aids : PPT’s
AEI 305.57 1
Recap

• In last class we have discussed about

• Introduction to PH
• PH scale

AEI 305.57 2
Objectives

upon completion of this period, you would be

able to know :

• Importance of measurement of pH

AEI 305.57 3
Importance of PH Measurement

• It is necessary to know in a process, the conditions of

the process material , at least , whether it has turned
basic , acidic or neutral during the reaction

• A close control of a particular condition is also

sometimes necessary.

AEI 305.57 4
Importance of PH Measurement…

• For example

• To control the reaction rate in a particular process

chamber , in ore reduction by floatation process

• For example or in corrosion prevention of condensate

chambers , a knowledge of the degree of acidity or
alkalinity of a fluid is necessary.

AEI 305.57 5
Importance of PH Measurement…

• pH measurement is also important in

• Public water works

• Pharmaceutical industry

• Food production

• Chemical processes

AEI 305.57 6
Importance of PH Measurement……

• Fertilizer industry

• Beverage industry

• Waste water treatment

• Neutralization of effluent in paper and pulp

industry

AEI 305.57 7
Public water works

• pH value of drinking water should be 7.2 to 8

• Lower value leads to corrosiveness

• Higher value leads to physiological effects

AEI 305.57 9
Pharmaceutical Applications

• pH of human blood should be 7.35

• Variation of pH (+ 0.05) causes serious complications

• Intravenious injections should be buffered to maintain

the 7.35 of pH

AEI 305.57 11
Importance…
• The value pH of a solution , in general however , will
depend on

• The chemical nature of the acid expressed by

the degree of disassociation

• The relative concentrations of the acid and its

conjugate base

• The temperature which affects the dissociation

AEI 305.57 12
Summary

In this period we have learnt about:

• Importance of pH measurement in
• Public Water works
• Pharmaceutical Industries

AEI 305.57 13
Quiz
• The pH of human blood should be

(a) 13.5

(b) 4.5

(c) 7.35

(d) 12.35
