Topic : Conductivity Measurement
Duration : 100 minutes

subtopic : Conductivity cell

Teaching Aids : PPT, Animations, Diagrams
AEI 305.67 to 68 1
Objectives

Upon completion of this topic, you would be

able to know about

• Conductivity cell

• Description

• Construction

AEI 305.67 to 68 2
Recap

In the previous period we have studied about :

• Definition of conductivity.

• Necessity of Conductivity measurement.

• Necessity of Conductivity Cell.

AEI 305.67 to 68 3
Description of Conductivity Cells

• The solution whose conductivity is to be measured is

taken in a cell called conductivity cell

• Conductivity cells are different for different purposes.

• However, the fundamental requirement for a pair of

electrodes are same.

AEI 305.67 to 68 4

AEI 305.67 to 68 5
Description of Conductivity Cells

• Electrodes are firmly located in a constant geometry with

respect to one another.

• Three types of cells which are generally used are shown.

Type – A, Type – B, Type - C

Type A cell consists of

• Smaller electrodes separated by larger

distance.

Ebonite
• Useful for measurement of high cover

conductance accurately.

AEI 305.67 to 68 8
Description of Conductivity Cells

Type B cell is

• A simple dipping cell.

• Used in conductometric titrations.

AEI 305.67 to 68 9
Description of Conductivity Cells

Type C cell consists of

• Larger electrodes separated by smaller

distance.

• Useful for measurement of low

conductance accurately.

AEI 305.67 to 68 10
Construction of Conductivity Cell

• The cells are usually made of Pyrex glass or quartz.

• These are fitted with platinum electrodes.

• Electrodes are platinum plates coated with finely divided

platinum.

AEI 305.67 to 68 11
Construction of Conductivity Cell

• This coating reduces the polarization effect.

• These are welded to platinum wires.

• Which are sealed through two glass tubes.

AEI 305.67 to 68 12
Construction of Conductivity Cell

• These tubes are firmly fixed in an ebonite cover.

• Hence, distance between electrodes are not altered

during experiment.
