Forcing Japan to surrender. Test the effectiveness of

weapon. Hiroshima had high concentration of troops, military facilities and factories.

Why Hiroshima ?
Untouched by bombing raid.

Bomb effects could be clearly measured.


Purely military target. Clear photographs of bombing.

Hiroshima bomb
Dropped on Hiroshima. Little boy used purified

U235. It was never tested. August 6,1945.

Little boy was ready for delivery by July 31.

The raid was set for august 6. Order of priority for bomb delivery was Kyoto,

Hiroshima, Kokura and Niigata. Target recommendations were made by the Target Committee. Among its primary concerns was showing off the bomb's power to the maximum effect.

On August 6, 1945 ,an

American B-29 bomber named the Enola Gay left for Hiroshima. The mission piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets. The bomb was fully armed on board the Enola Gay.

At 8:15 a.m., Little Boy exploded.

Surgical Hospital. Burst temperature reached over million degrees. Fireball expanded to 900 feet. The co-pilot, Captain Robert Lewis, commented, "My God, what have we done?

Invade or Bomb?
May 1945,Germany had surrendered. Japanese strategy.

Japanese Navy had been destroyed.


Two atomic bombs were available. Truman made a decision, drop bomb as soon as

possible.

Kokura was the primary

target Nagasaki was the secondary target. Originally scheduled for August 11, 1945, the mission was advanced to August 9 due to weather concerns. Bock's Car was overloaded by the heavy bomb

On August 9, 1945 ,1:56 A.M.

with scant yards of runway left Bock's Car lifted off. When they got to Kokura they found the haze and smoke obscuring the city as well as the large ammunition arsenal. The B-29s broke off and headed for Nagasaki.

Nagasaki was a city on the

west coast of Kyushu. On august 9,1945 Captain Kermit K. Beehan made the drop at 10:58 A.M. Nagasaki time. Location of Attack

Japanese Foreign Minister

Shigenori Togo called the ninth of August "a bad day." Acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration August 15, 1945, Japan's surrender. The war was over.

More than 40% of the city

was destroyed. Major hospitals had been destroyed Schools, churches, and homes had simply disappeared. Transportation was impossible.

It is the amount of

radiation absorbed by the body that causes destruction to living tissues and cells. Factors
The size of the dose

(amount of energy deposited in the body) The ability of the radiation to harm human tissue Which organs are affected

Hair
Hair lose at radiation exposure at 200 rems or higher.

Brain
Brain cells do not reproduce, they won't be damaged

directly unless the exposure is 5,000 rems or greater..


Blood System
Exposure to around 100 rems reduces blood's

lymphocyte cell . This is often referred to as mild radiation sickness.


Heart
1,000 to 5,000 rems of exposure would damage blood

vessels . Causes heart failure and death directly.

The T-bridge's barriers had

been knocked awry. Utility poles stood at odd angles. Damage to buildings.
