If nothing is done to slow down Green House Gas (GHG) emissions

CO2 concentrations will likely be more than 700 ppm by 2100 Global average temperatures projected to increase between 1.4 5.8C

Malaysian Commitment During COP 15

I would also like to announce here in Copenhagen that Malaysia is adopting an indicator of a voluntary reduction of up to 40% in terms of emissions intensity of GDP by the year 2020 compared to 2005 levels. This indicator is conditional on receiving the transfer of technology and finance of adequate and correspond to what is required in order to achieve this indicator

Background
Situation Decision-making process in endusers: top-down approach Energy Manager is ONLY a technical function As of today, low level of implementation in end-users because lack of awareness and/or interest in EE&C. When end-users are pro-active in EE&C, it is always because of top management awareness/ commitment Consequence Energy will not be considered if not regarded in decision making process Energy managers cannot get support/ commitment from their board Energy matters not a topic of decision at management board level

Preliminary conclusions
Objective Energy Managers must have managerial and business skills to convince board, secure commitment, get budget, and manage EE&C system Energy Managers must have access to the board AEMAS Approach The training curriculum focuses exclusively on managerial aspects. It is intended for managers, not technicians. An Energy Management System Implementation Guidebook is provided to certified energy managers International certification to increase credibility; minimum requirement for companies to attain AEMAS certification End-users obtain Energy Management Gold Standard certification upon improvement of EE

End-users must derive clear benefits from implementing EnMgt best practices

Certification of end-users

Rationale
Energy savings is not the main driver (minimal vs. total production cost in most cases) Companies mostly sensitive to increasing production capacity, expanding sales channels, increasing sales volumes Corporate image and marketing are key drivers Analysis of success of ISO 14001: driver is NOT improved environmental performance
GreenTech MALAYSIA
19

Certification of end-users
Certification
Builds confidence over actual achievements through independent third-party certification Facilitates international trade as many international companies require their suppliers to be certified Improves corporate image towards final consumers

Benefits
Demonstrate leadership in EE on the national and international arena Facilitates preparation of CSR report Prepares for M-R-V Improves perception of final consumers towards product quality (although no direct link)

GreenTech MALAYSIA

20

Certification of end-users
First-time certification

Energy Management Gold Standard

Certification demonstrating sustainability in EnMgt system (continuous improvement of Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) over 3 years or maintaining of good EEI over 3 years)

Certification renewal showing improvement in EEI
