Stress and job performance


Effects of stress on performance. Stress varies from person to person. It depends on the challenges and how the person copes up the those challenges. Stress gives two types of result depending on person s mindset n its control power. It is the basic fact said that as the stress increases , perfomance tends to increase and its opposite.

when the maximum limit gets over then the perfomance of employee may deteriorate. When stress increasess to a breaking point , perfomance becomes zero. Here when this situation occurs the employee becomes too ill to work, is fired , quits, or refuses to come to work to face the stress.

Stress is compared to a violin strings.

Stress vulnerability
Stress threshold: There are two factors which help determine how stress will affect employee perfomance differently across similar jobs . IT depends on the level of stressors that the employee can tolerate before negative feelings of stress occur and adversely affect perfomance.

Perceived control: The second internal factor affecting employee stress is the amount of perceived control they have over their work and working conditions .

There are two types of behaviours: Type A and Type B people: Type people are aggressive and competitive , set their standards , are impatient with themselves and others. They are less hostile n may be less hostile n prone to heart disease.

Type B people: They appear more relaxed and easygoing. They are more productive workers who meet schedule expactations ; they simply obtain results in different manner.

Approaches to Stress Management


There are three approaches to stress management . Prevent Escape Cope

Types of support
Social support: Some people experience stress because they feel they are detached from the world around them . A powerfull antidote to this problem lies in the presence of social support.

Relaxation : Some employees use this mode to reduce stress. It is patterned the practice of mediation. The relaxation response involves quiet , concentrated inner thought in order to rest the body physically and emotionally .

The ideal ingredients of this relaxation effort involve: A comfortable position in a relatively quiet location. Closed eyes and deep , comfortable breaths. Repetition of a peaceful word , or focus on a pleasant mental image. Avoidance of distracting thoughts and negative events.

Soothing background music. Relaxation may help to cope up with stress.

Sabbaticals: Sabbatical leaves to encourage stress relief and personal education . Some sabbaticals provide time off, others give partially paid leaves and a few continue full pay while employees are away.

Personal Wellness: In house programs of preventive maintenance for personal wellness. Corporate wellness centers may include disease screening , health education and fitness centress.
