As part of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the Mobile Data Service provides an optimized platform for mobile applications running on advanced wireless, packet-data networks by providing a secure gateway between the wireless network and corporate intranets and the Internet. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server provides four important functions for enabling wireless applications:
Network Connectivity: As part of BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the Mobile Data Service provides standard HTTP and TCP/IP connections from the handhelds to corporate intranets or the Internet. BlackBerry Enterprise Server maintains information about all BlackBerry users in the enterprise. Push support: With the BlackBerry solution, users handhelds remain continuously connected to the wireless network. Data can be sent without users having to request it explicitly.
BlackBerry Enterprise Server also works with existing corporate data stores and enterprise applications, such as CRM, ERP, business intelligence and document management systems, allowing organizations to extend this information wirelessly.

Blackberry Components
BES consists of a set of Windows services that carry out the basic operations of the system. These Windows Services can include (additional services may be (Installed depending on configuration): BlackBerry Alert BlackBerry Attachment Service Retrieves and converts attachments to a format specific for BlackBerry device For documents with file extensions .doc, .xls, .ppt, .pdf, .wpd, and .txt, the Attachment Service renders the content into the Universal Content Stream format for viewing on the device. BlackBerry Controller Monitors the status of the BlackBerry services. Services are started if failed or stopped up to ten times in a row. BlackBerry Database Consistency Service BlackBerry Dispatcher All communication between the BlackBerry components passes through this service
