HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS PROBLEM?


Aganang Municipality is hundred percent rural with high rate migrant labour. As such the elderly are left behind to man the households and take care of children. Therefore abuse of older persons especially older women became a common cause which was identified through the following: Older Persons' Forum Statistics on domestic violence at local police station[ Matlala SAPS] Through reports by councillors and community development workers

The older Persons Act 2006, Chapter 5 gives more emphasis on the protection of older persons. Therefore we find the issue to be very important because through our intervention programmes they get all the help they need in order to protect themselves and to be vigilant.

16 days of activism which starts from the 25 November to 25 December which is during the 2nd quarter of the year. Elderly campaign was held on the 5th December 2011.

Unreported cases of Older Persons abuse i.e. sexual abuse, financial abuse. There is a lot of cultural stereo types amongst them. Grand children are mostly the perpetrators.
