Cylindrical rollers are used in bearings where the majority load is in the radial direction. Although mostly cylindrical in shape, some specialist bearings have convex barrel shapes or concave profiles depending on the application type and conditions. Pure cylindrical roller bearings cannot support any load in an axial direction. If axial support is required a separate bearing arrangement will be required.
Cylindrical rollers are used in various applications. They can carry huge loads. They have high radial load capacity and are suited for high speed applications. It offers low noise, low heat generation , and for more adorous applications.
The cylindrical rollers had to be designed for use in a sheet straightening machine. The existing rollers on the machine were faulty hindering the smooth motion of the workpiece. The straightened workpieces were deforming while exiting the machine due to the faulty rollers. The height adjustment mechanism was faulty and time consuming to use.
Steel was selected as the material for fabricating the rollers for high strength and durability. Shielded single row deep groove ball bearings were selected for ease of lubrication. Bearings of bore dia 20mm and outer dia 52mm were used as the were capable of handling the specified load.

ROLLER
For the roller we first cut steel rods of diameter 50mm into rods of length 200 mm each. Turning operation was performed on these rods for a length of 20mm on either side to give 20mm resultant diameter to achieve a push fit for the bearings. The edges were chamfered.
BEARING HOUSING
The bearing housing circular discs were cut out from a metal plate of thickness 22mm using a CNC oxy-fuel cutter. The resultant part was machined in the lathe to get the required dimensions to house the bearing. Chamfering was done where required.
the housing covering we used sheet metal of thickness 5mm. A disc of diameter 70mm was cut from this using a CNC oxy-flame cutter.
