SML ISUZU VEHICLES ARE NOT ONLY STRONGER ON THE ROAD BUT ALSO FUEL EFFICIENT. FULLY LOADED THEY GIVE AN AVERAGE OF 13.5 KM/L AT 45 KM/HR.

5S Activity in SML ISUZU limited :In order to achieve the goals set up by the concerns effectively and efficiently the organization follows the 5S activity that is:

SIEIRI: Classify the things into necessary ones and unnecessary ones. Discard the unnecessary ones. SEITION: Put the things in order so that they are available when needed. SEISO: Keep the work area and the machine /tool clean so that abnormal conditions are detected. SEIKETSU: keep the work area clean as well as the personal cleanliness. The conditions of the company should be hygienic. SHITSUKE: There should be all around discipline. The workers should be taught to work in a disciplined manner. The result of all this has been rapid increase in output of vehicles and sharp reduction in cash loses. The turn over for 2010-2011 exceeds Rs. 350 crores. Today the company manufactures light commercial vehicles like trucks, buses, police vans, water tankers, ambulance, and special vehicles and also exports to the countries like Nepal, Zambia, Bangladesh, Kenya, Sri-Lanka and Jordan.

ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT :

Technology department is concerned with providing new technologies and methods for production for its units . It also provides technical assistance on the shop-floor .

Project:Time Study

What is time study?

Time study is a work measurement technique to calculate the performance of Assembly line . The observations so obtained are analyzed properly and optimum steps are taken to increase the efficiency of Assembly line .

Operations department is facing a lot of problems today like high levels of boredom , absenteeism , low personnel turnover and dissatisfaction among assembly workers. All these factors leads to low production of plant . Thus , it is very necessary to identify the problems and take proper steps .

Time study is a method of direct observation. A trained observer watches the job and records data as the job is being performed over a number of cycles.
Time study equipment Stop watch in general . Time study board for holding time study sheet in place . Time study sheet for recording observations .

Selecting the job for Time study

A piece of equipment that appears to be idle for an excessive time or its output is low, and it therefore becomes necessary to investigate the method of its use. The job in question is a new one, not previously carried out (new product, component, operation or set of activities) A change in material or method of working has been made and a new time standard is required. A complaint has been received from a worker or workers representative about the time standard for an operation.

A particular operation appears to be a bottleneck holding up subsequent operations and possibly previous operations. Standard times are required before an incentive scheme is introduced. The job needs studying as a preliminary to marking a method study, or to compare the efficiency of two proposed methods.

Before starting the study, there are a number of points to be observed in relation to the approach to the worker and the job he is doing. These are as follows: Make sure the job has been method studied. Especially where the standard time is to be used for incentive purposes. In an organization where time study has never been used before, supervision and worker representatives should be told the reasons for the study programme and given and insight into tie study procedure. It is good policy to ask the supervisor or workers representatives to be studied. The worker should be a competent steady person with an average rate of working.

The worker should be told the reasons for the study. Why he has been selected and asked to work at his normal pace explaining any problems that may arise during the time the study is taken. Workers should be allowed plenty of time to settle down to new methods. When making the study the observer should take a position where he can see the whole of the job being performed. This is generally to the side of the operator, slightly to the rear and approximately 6-feet away. No attempt should be made to carry out timing from a concealed position, without the operators knowledge or with the watch in the pocket.

The observer should take a comfortable standing position for the duration of the study.

Time-study sheet

The time study sheet contain columns of Working time , Free time , Total working time , Total free time , Allowances , Unutilized time , Available working time , Actual working time , Approximate units can be made by utilizing free time .And rows contain the Station numbers .

TIME STUDY RESULTS:

Engine Line study :

Current Daily production : 50units Total working time : 425 mins. Total free time : 220 mins. Allowances: 75 Possible production :75 units

Cabin-Welding line study:

Current Daily production : 36units Total working time : 425 mins. Average Total free time : 245mins. Allowances: 75 Possible production :60 units .

Transmission Line study :

Current Daily production : 50 Total working time : 425 mins. Total free time : 200 mins. Allowances: 75 Possible production : 70

AXLE LINE STUDY

HYDRAULIC BRAKES LINE

AIR BRAKES LINE

Current Daily production : 35 units Total working time : 425 mins. Total Average free time : 191 mins. Allowances: 75 Possible Average production :48 units

Current Daily production : 35 units Total working time : 425 mins. Total Average free time : 191 mins. Allowances: 275 Possible Average production :72 units

Frame welding Line study :

FRAME LINE 1 Current Daily production : 22 units Total working time : 425 mins. Total free time : 260 mins. Allowances: 75 Possible production :38 units FRAME LINE 2 Current Daily production : 22 units Total working time : 425 mins. Total free time : 272 mins. Allowances: 75 Possible production :38 units

Conclusion :

From the Time-study , it can be analyzed that production in all the assembly lines can be increased by 30-40% . Thus , various steps should be taken to increase the production of the company .
